In Europe, Tata Steel is one of the largest steel producers. By serving many demanding markets around the world — including construction and infrastructure, automotive, packaging and engineering — Tata Steel understands that its customers' needs differ in every market.

The Tata Steel IJmuiden site covers an area of roughly 700 hectares and spans three municipalities (Velsen, Beverwijk and Heemskerk). A great deal happens behind the company's gates: raw materials arrive by ship and, after various processing steps, are distributed as steel coils that travel to customers by rail, inland vessel, seagoing vessel or truck.

The Challenge

Tata Steel initiated a selection process for a digital platform to streamline processes in the new situation. The project was based on the following requirements:

  • Enable faster onboarding through an automated digital process.
  • Effective and efficient deployment of external security officers at the desks.
  • Comply with GDPR legislation regarding the retention of historical personal data.
  • Improve the quality of hospitality services for external and internal stakeholders.
  • Improve the overall security and safety of the IJmuiden sites, ensuring no unauthorized visitors on site.

The solution

To ensure safety on the complex, Tata Steel's Corporate Security Department (DBB) maintains extensive access and safety procedures. In the previous situation, this led to many manual registrations and checks at the various receptions and desks for site access. This situation created the desire for a new digital process.

With the arrival of ID Flow, Tata Steel now has a complete digital process for inviting and (pre-)registering visitors and contractors, and managing access authorizations.

Result

In the new situation, the ID Flow software platform is used by security staff at the various desks. In addition, Tata Steel employees and contractors use the self-service functionalities of ID Flow.

"This allows users to arrange their registration in advance, which significantly speeds up the issuance of access credentials at the desk," says Chris van Amersfoort, Head of the Corporate Security Department.

"The ID Flow platform also enables contractors to log in and upload documentation (such as an employer's statement and VCA documents). With the approval module, security can check and approve these documents in advance. Because all data is available digitally, a (re)application is arranged more easily and quickly. Furthermore, ID Flow helps ensure our process is fully compliant with our access and safety policy," says Van Amersfoort.
